Sleep deprivation

by Janette Tombleson

cbt-cognitive behaviour therapyMany people come to me complaining of insomnia and inability to sleep. When it starts to affect your concentration and even getting yourself to work, it’s generally accepted as serious enough to call in the counsellors. Better sleep keeps the body healthier and the mind more alerts (Counselling Northern Beaches).

Researchers at the University of Berkeley found that acute sleep deprivation makes it hard to distinguish between happy and angry faces, particularly for women.  Girls you may be crossing the man of your dreams off your list!!!!

I was reading an interesting article by Avigail Gordon entitled “Facing up to Fatigue”. It was about how  a sleep deprived person finds it hard to read emotions in another. It’s already difficult for Venusian ladies to decipher those men from Mars.

Students know it’s important to get a good night’s sleep before a big exam, but some swot it out to the early hours of the morning to no better avail.  A new study suggests it would be wise to catch up on your rest just before a big date too.

“Every emotion depends on a different brain network” explains  study coauthor, “Els van de Helm,” and sleep deprivation affects some more than others.

This kind of research is critical for sleep deprived occupations such as doctors, military personnel and even new parents.  Such people often rely heavily on emotional processing skills to make the right, even life critical calls.

Just one night’s good sleep can restore normal processing levels. I will post the next article on counselling northern beaches soon!
